Charleston, SC.  March 24, 2018 – The Trump White House announced late last night a policy recommendation that states that “transgender persons who require or have undergone gender transition are disqualified from military service.”

The policy adopts the recommendations made by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in February when he  cited “substantial risks” about military personnel who seek to change or who question their gender identity. This assertion contradicts a 2016 study by RAND Corporation, which found that allowing transgender people to serve in the military would “have minimal impact on readiness and health care costs” for the Pentagon.

In response, AFFA (The Alliance for Full Acceptance) Executive Director, Chase Glenn released the following statement:

“This policy is discriminatory and disrespects the thousands of transgender troops who have been faithfully and courageously serving in our military for years. It is an attack on patriotic individuals who have risked their lives for our country and is based on ignorance, misinformation and bigotry. There are transgender troops who are medically fit and ready to deploy who will be pulled from the ranks because this administration wishes to appeal to its political base. Trans people are not political pawns.  AFFA stands with our brave transgender community and we will continue to fight for their equal rights.”

AFFA (Alliance for Full Acceptance) is a social justice organization that strives to achieve equality and acceptance for the Lowcountry area LGBTQ community, through support, advocacy and education in schools, businesses and government organizations. Established in 1998, AFFA has over 1600 donor/members and is headquartered in Charleston, SC. For more information visit: affa-sc.org.
